Early memories of internet in Pakistan

Hello dear friends.

The internet was introduced to the general Public in Pakistan around 1993. At the time, it came as a UNDP- founded project called the sustainable Development Networking Program. Initially only large corporations and banks had access to it and then in 1995 a private company called DJ Com started providing its dial up internet service from Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad with the speed of 64 kbps.

In the same year, Pakistan Telecommunication Company Ltd also started providing its dial up service through its subsidiary. Pak Net. According to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, about 102 millions people in Pakistan use 3-G internet and 4-G internet. While number of fixed line internet connections is around 104 millions.

According to one estimate, the number of internet users in Pakistan is between 47 to 50 percent. According to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority from 2019 to 2020 Telecom Sector contributed more than Rs.278 billions to the National Economy of more than which was 41 billion was in taxes also.

In most cities of Pakistan fastest internet in the shape of fiber is also available alongside 3-G and 4-G internet. Now the Pakistan is few numbers of that countries where more than half of its population is using internet and same is equally available in big cities, villages and rural area of the country.

In March 2000 for the first time in Pakistan, a backbone, the main connection link through which all the network traffic of an internet company or a country passes, was transmitted from satellite to fiber and an underwater fiber cable was laid because more data can be transferred instantly via fiber then through satellite, they called it a turning point in the history of the internet in Pakistan, after which people began to see fast internet in Pakistan as a reality.

If you born after the year 2000, it is very likely that you have never encountered the problem that you are browsing the internet and that someone in your home has your landline receiver to call someone. Pick it up and the two or three MBs songs you have to download for the last three hours will stop there and you will walk out of the house in a fit of rage.
